A LITTLE HISTORY.
The history of Welton Cricket Club has been lost in the mists of time
but it would seem that the village had a cricket team in the early 1800's.
Initially, the cricket ground was further south down Common Lane, near
to the railway line at a place called Goforth plantation. It is alleged that
the name was derived from the expression "go forth and play cricket".
The ground was laid out in it's present location in 1893 by Colonel
Harrison-Broadley, a member of a long established notable local
family, for the inhabitants of the Parish of Welton. The ground was
donated to the Welton Cricket Club in 1950 by the dependants of the
late Captain J.Harrison-Broadley, thereby fulfilling his known wishes,
and is now vested in Trustees nominated by the Club's General Committee.
The ceremony tothe cricket ground in it's present situation was
performed by Sir Stanley Jackson, Colonel Harrison-Broadley's
son-in-law and famous cricketer who captained the England team which
won the Ashes in 1893.
Sir Stanley Jackson who died on 9 March 1947 (77 years old) is now
buried with his wife Julia, who was born in Welton, in Welton Cemetery.
Many famous names have played cricket at Welton throughout the years,
including Lord Hawke, W. Rhodes, G. Hirst, W. Bowes, HON F.S.Jackson,
D.B. Close and W. Watson - all well known Yorkshire and England Cricketers.

Towards the end of 1964 Richard Swaine was asked to design
plans and a model for a new pavilion to replace the ancient
and decaying corrugated iron cricket pavilion. The total cost of
building ground preparation, and fees amounted to £6,980 and a grant
of £3,270 was obtained from the Ministry of Education. A load of £800
was obtained from the National Playing Fields Association, and a special
appeal was made and additional funds were raised by means of donations
and loans from members, and Vice-Presidents - all the loans were cleared
within four years. 36 years later the pavilion and clubhouse are still
proving to be one of the best in the area.
